I stood and peered out from the corner of an upstairs window as cops crawled all over the area where Rasta Jimmy was found. Dammit. More often than not, he had helped Jen if she was caught lying about where she was. He was a good guy, mellow, just wanting to chill and smoke pot. He’d gotten in with the wrong people.

Mike had texted the brothers and Hayden to stay away in the morning and only to come in through the back door after school.

So far, Watters had kept his word. None of the cops had gone into the warehouse. Watters said he’d claimed it was under his investigation. That was good, in a way. The problem was that meant we owed Watters.

He wanted intel on Rex and what he was up to. I wasn’t sure we would be able to give him what he wanted. Jimmy was sort of a neutral ally who occasionally helped out when we needed it. He was harmless. His death was senseless, even though I understood why Rex—or Mole—had done it. It didn’t matter who. It was the same thing. They’d made an example of him. Crossing Rex wasn’t an option unless someone wanted to end up like Jimmy.

It put me in a damn hard position. If I continued to see Jenni, my guys would be targeted. Rex was on to us. It wasn’t a stretch.

The only thing was, I didn’t want to give up on my girlfriend. There was a huge risk—or possibly a sacrifice—if we continued on as we’d been. I had to make a choice.

After a few hours, the activity in front of our home receded. When the agents left and no other movement stirred on the street below, I pushed away from the edge of the window frame and went downstairs. Hawk had shut the door to the roof with a quiet click and was heading down too. It looked like we were on the same page.

“After we grab some food, I need to talk to you guys.” I acknowledged Hawk’s nod and went into the kitchen to make a sandwich. I could hear the muted gunshots and explosions from the video game Keegan and Mike were playing. They’d taken off right before the cops showed to scout the area for anything people might have thrown out. It was garbage day the next day, and sometimes people put stuff out early that we could turn around and sell. Anything of value went fast. We stayed on top of that as much as possible.

I took a large bite out of my sandwich. A few minutes later, Hawk sat next to me, his first sandwich down to the last bite. He had another already waiting in the other hand. When Mike and Keegan’s game wrapped up, I cleared my throat. “I need to talk to you about Jimmy and what we’re going to do.”

Fire flashed in Keegan’s eyes. He wanted to retaliate. I already knew that.

“We’re not doing anything back.” I alternated my gaze between Keegan and Mike.
